A plum deal – THE winter lip colours

It’s a plum explosion.  Everywhere I turn plum, plum, plum.  Oh how I love it!

The lovely Hayley from Glory Days Vintage inspired this post, with her own amazing look and ‘find me a matte plum lipstick’ request on Twitter.  If you know any indestructible dark, matte lipsticks then please let me know. We have a need!

Winter is the perfect time to embrace the dark side.  Goth up your pout a bit, or if you’re a bit scared it might end up in you listening to Sisters of Mercy while drinking red wine, then go for a lighter offering but still in the spectrum, or use a stain.

Think The Great Gatsby and Boardwalk Empire for a bit of easy visual inspiration. Roaring Twenties style lips with a 2013 update.

L-R: Revlon Just Bitten in Crush, Bourjois Colour Boost Crayon in Plum Russian, Nars Satin Lip Pencil in Palais Royal, Rimmel Moisture Renew in Sloane’s Plum, Rimmel Moisure Renew in Glam Plum Fulham, Collection Gothic Glam in Revenge, Revlon ColorBurst Lipgloss in Embellished and Stila Lip Glaze in Dahlia. (Phew)

I own 8 plum shades. Now I look at this I think maybe it’s a bit excessive! But these are the purchases of a dark lip obsessor.  They range from stains to sheer gloss and full on satin power plums. I love them all.

Fancy a run down?  This is quite a long post…grab a cuppa!

1. Revlon: Just Bitten in 005 Crush – £7.99 Boots
As a stain, this lasts for hours. Gives a hint of colour if you’re gentle with the application, but it is really easy to build.  The downside? The terrible smell. Really.

2. Bourjois: Colour Boost in Plum Russian – £7.99 Boots
Very similar to the Revlon stain but more gloss to it. Looks lighter on the bullet but actually swatches ever so slightly more rosy. Doesn’t last as long either, the ’10 hour’ claim is baffling to me. I guess maybe it leaves a hint of colour?  Regardless, it’s moisturising and I love it for daytime wear when I don’t want to look too made-up.

3. Nars: Satin Lip Pencil in Palais Royal  – £17.50 Space NK
The Nars Satin and Matte lip pencils are absolutely my holy grail lip products. I can’t even profess my adoration for them enough.  Yes, they’re only lip products but my oh my they come in amazing shades, go on so easily, last for absolutely ages… just perfect.  Palais Royal is full on, don’t be shy when wearing it. One swipe gives full coverage massive plum lips. Gorgeous.

4 & 5. Rimmel Moisture Renew in Sloane’s Plum and Glam Plum Fulham – £6.49 each Boots
The new formula of Moisture Renew is great. It has good staying power, a really nice chic sheen to it (and good value too). Similar shades on first glance, but Glam Plum Fulham is definitely more of a berry hit, whereas Sloane’s Plum is a deeper plum shade. Both are great for dry and chapped lips as they don’t that show that up and add a moisture boost to your pout.

Swatches on paper – most have 2 swipes except the glosses (much more!).
Bit messy isn’t it?! Oh, and the Bourjois is not Prune, it’s Plum Russian. I apologise profusely.

6. Collection Gothic Glam in #3 Revenge – £2.99 Boots
Confession. I have only ever bought 1 pressed powder from Collection (2000, as it was then) and hated it.  So it’s the stand I bypass any time I’m in Boots.  But after seeing Kellie from Big Fashionista mentioning the Gothic Glam lipsticks on Twitter, my interest perked up.  Anything with ‘gothic’ in the title has to be good in my books. Maybe it’s still 1999 in my head, when my world was full of black clothes, black eyeliner and dark, dark lipstick (those were the days!).

I’m not disappointed. Shade 3 (Revenge) is amazing. It’s less than £3. I absolutely can’t believe that because it goes on so easily, is so richly pigmented, stays on for absolutely ages and is only second to Nars in my favourite product of the season. It’s not luxe by any means, but yes, I’m now hooked and gladly so as if it’s only a few quid, then I have little guilt about maybe getting the rest of that collection. Goth all the way indeed!

7. Revlon ColorBurst Lipgloss in Embellished – £7.99 Boots
I’d love to say I’m matte all the way with plum lips, but I don’t feel like I carry it off that well. Reds – yes. Plums – just not as good on me.  So, here comes my little hero.  This gloss is deep and dark, if you’re very generous with it then the colour payoff is great. But mainly, I love this for layering on top of any of the above shades for extra dark punch, especially at night.

8. Stila Lip Glaze in Dahlia – part of the Awesome Blossom Trio – £12.00 ASOS.com
This is not strictly speaking, a plum, but I’ve included it for anyone looking for a slightly darker hint for daytime. It’s more blackcurrant toned and it’s fairly close to the Revlon stain in Crush, so if you want to layer it, then that would be a good option.  What can I say about this?  I like the brush applicator, the colour is pretty and sheer, it smells (& tastes) quite nice!
I’ve used Stila Lip Glazes for years, and they’re an essential in my makeup collection for sure.

What’s your current must-have lip colour? Let me know what I need to check out this month, or put on my Christmas wish list!
